The lagoons surrounding the
Lagoa Bonita

The lagoa Bonita, as the name suggests, is one of most beautiful lagoons in the Lençois. As with all the other lagoons in this area, it is a formation of water between the great sand dunes in the Lençois.
As we arrived, we parked our cars and walked up a dune that was probably 20 meters high to check the wind conditions. The wind was blowing at a force of approximately 14 knots, and we decided to take the Rhinos 14 and 16 along our journey over the desert. After carrying all the equipment over this dune, which was a sporting event by itself, we began a long trek over the desert to get to a lagoon that had appropriate conditions.

Walking for hours over the sand dunes and between the lagoons is quite a different experience to find a kiting spot. We were carrying all the gear over many sand dunes, some up to 30 meters high. This can start to become tyring after the fourth or fifth dune you cross. The lagoons we passed through, though, had some amazing colors, ranging from blue to green and to clear transparent according to the time of the day and the shadow of the clouds passing by. After about one hour of sand-trekking and an suffocating heat, we finally managed to find a lagoon that seemed perfect for our purposes. We unpacked our cameras, camcorders and of course the kite equipment and started kiting in a lagoon next to the lagoa Bonita.

What does this feel like? Just take a brief look at the pictures if you think you can handle it. Honestly speaking, kiting here was the best sporting experience each one of us has had in our entire lives. The wind was not that constant, and our kites fell in the water a couple of times. But just being able to kite in these green, blue and transparent lagoons, in which you could see your own shadow on the ground under the water being surrounded by these enormous walls of white sand is indescribable.

After kiting in the first lagoon, we realized we could kite over the dunes, or rather walk over with the help of our kites. Climbing a dune while connected to a kite makes things much easier since the kite tends to pull you up a bit. The poor guys taking the pictures and filming all this got the raw end of the deal, but we managed to switch roles from time to time. Anyway, we started walking over the sand and ended up being pulled up on sand dunes that must have been about 20 meters high. At the top of it, we looked down and saw a little lagoon that was unbelievably crystal clear. We went down to the edge of it, and promptly went in. Many times the dunes acted as walls and kept the wind from blowing constantly into the lagoons. This happened a couple of times, but still we had plenty of fun. We kept walking over sand dunes and jumping from one lagoon to the other for hours…and could not stop discovering new lagoons along our path. But the best was still to come, and we did not even know it…when we kited in the Lagoa da Risada.
