Lençois Maranhenses
National Park
The park of the Lençois Maranhenses has 155,000 hectars of beaches, lakes, and dunes. The majority of this land has very little vegetation and mostly unstudied wildlife. It is a strange and yet very beautiful landscape of shifting white dunes, stretching about 140 km along the coast between Tutoia and Primeira Cruz, west of Barreirinhas. The dunes can be up to 40 meters high, and are formed by the constantly blowing wind from the ocean. The park extends approximately 50 km into the continent and has about 70 km of deserted beaches. The rainy season is between December and June, which for many is the best time to visit.
In the valleys of these dunes you can find breathtaking blue and green lagoons. In July, the lagoons start to diminish due to the strong winds and the heat of the dry season that lasts until November. So, the best time to practice kiteboarding and other sports relying on wind is definitely between July and September. Now you can imagine how eager we were to finally jump into one of theses lagoons and to practice our favorite sport, especially after the 3000-4000 km we had driven from Sao Paulo to Barreirinhas, the little village that is the starting point for the numerous off road and adventure excursions to the National park of the Lençois Maranhenses.
