Finding the lagoons...
After this interesting struggle from Atins to Barreirinhas, we still needed to get to the edge of the national park a bit farther south to check the lagoons we had seen from the plane and were so eager to discover.
After all the problems with the engine, it had taken us four hours instead of two hours to drive back. Anyway, in Barreirinhas we bought some food and water, and after picking up a local guide, we drove to the other end of the park near the lagoon called Lagoa Bonita. It would take us about two hours to get there, and we wanted to make sure that the ride to the lagoons wouldn’t be as bad as the one from Atins to Barreirinhas. We did not pass through so much water this time, and the guide knew exactly which roads we needed to take. No more risks today¯almost losing the engine was enough.
Indeed there was not much water on this route, but if it is not one thing than it is another: the sand was so soft that we got stuck a couple of times. However, it was nothing that our truck could not handle by itself. It was already quite late as we got there, but we could still enjoy the sunset over the formation of dunes and lagoons. The views are amazing, and we could not believe that we would have the opportunity to go kiting there the next day.
Kimiko had organized accommodation for us on a cashew farm about five km away from the park. Contantino, the farmer, and his family had already prepared chicken, rice, beans, salad, and of course cashews. We slept in hammocks hanging under a roof of dry palm tree leafs, and decided to wake up early to finally visit some of the numerous lagoons of the park. We had a quick breakfast, packed our stuff together, thanked Constantino and his family for their hospitality and left to check the lagoa Bonita.
